I'm GaelenI am originally from South Pasadena, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. I attended UC Berkeley for my undergraduate degree, majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice. I then went on to attend medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. I have now completed three of the four years of medical school and am taking a gap year to pursue an MPhil in Public Health at Cambridge University, made possible by the gracious support of Rotary International. I found Rotary International through a friend who had previously served as a Global Scholar and immediately knew my goals fit perfectly with Rotary's passion for disease treatment and prevention worldwide. I am interested in global health and have participated in medical research and outreach around the world, including projects in Costa Rica, Vietnam and Kenya. My most recent research interests surround HIV transmission and treatment among serodiscordant couples in East Africa. I hope to continue this global health work through collaboration with the Cambridge Institute of Public Health and am excited for the MPhil to help build skills to be a physician researcher in the future. My ancestors traveled to America from England on the Mayflower and I'm very excited to spend the next year making my ancestors proud by learning to brew a proper cup of tea and, as an avid soccer player, going to as many football matches as possible.
